Where are new Denver residents coming from?

It’s a well-known fact that the population of Denver is growing. We feel the effects of our popularity in the rising prices of our homes, the more crowded venues, restaurants and schools and on the roads! The purpose of this article is not to complain about the headaches of getting around town but to make an observation. In an effort to keep my cool behind the wheel while driving (sitting) – I play the license plate game. There aren’t any official rules to this game. I just keep track, in my head, of all the different plates I see each week. To validate my findings, I thought about taking photos of all the different plates but that’s dangerous, same with taking notes. But, I am pretty sure that some weeks, I literally see every State in the union including Hawaii and Alaska. Some are surely tourists but a lot are new residents. Where are they coming from?

According to an article from the Denver Metro Association of Realtors most are coming from right here in Colorado. Our neighboring cities of Boulder, Colorado Springs, Greeley and Ft. Collins provide most of the new residents to Denver. That’s not super interesting… for various reasons including student status, new jobs, or new relationships Coloradans move around our State. But what about everyone else?

According to a Census from 2010-2016, the people of the following cities were the largest group of our new citizens:

  • Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA
  • Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI
  • Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX
  • Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV
  • Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ
  • New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA

I totally agree with these findings! I see a ton of cars from California, Illinois, Texas and Arizona. We need a follow up story to research the top reasons for making the move.

It will be fun to see the next Census – I bet that Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming move up the chart.
